Geri Allen Quartet ~ Detroit International Jazz Festival

Sunday, September 6

Geri Allen Geri Allen Quartet
6:00 – 7:30 PM, Absopure Waterfront Stage

All About Jazz hailed this pianist, composer and arranger for possessing “a gorgeous glassy touch on the piano and an excellent sense of tradition and future.” Born in Pontiac (MI) and reared in the musical creativity of Detroit, Allen has performed and recorded with Paul Motion, Dewey Redman, Oliver Lake, and Betty Carter. In 1996, she had the distinction of being invited to record with the legendary Ornette Coleman. The sessions, which marked only the second time that Coleman had recorded with a pianist, produced Sound Museum: Three Women and Sound Museum: Hidden Man. Her own recordings include the well-received Maroons (1992), Twenty-One (1994), The Gathering (1998), The Life of a Song (2004)and her most recent, 2006’s Timeless Portraits and Dreams. Allen will be joined by Kenny Davis on bass, Kassa Overall on drums, and Maurice Chestnut as “tap dancing percussionist.”
